Seminar: The Role of the Professional Agrologist Under the New Professional Governance Act

ABSTRACT:
Brian’s presentation will include a short overview of the new Professional Governance Act with emphasis on the changes required for registrants of the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists, and what it means for practicing professionals in BC. This will build upon our earlier discussions in LWS 550 on the Role and Responsibilities of the Professional, and Professional Ethics.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Brian Mauza, P.Ag. has a B.Sc in Agriculture from the University of Alberta and a Master of Science in Nematology from Simon Fraser University. Brian has been an active member of the BC Institute of Agrologists since 1977, having achieved his P.Ag status in 1979. He served as the Executive of the Fraser Valley Branch for 3 years. From 2002-2011, he was the Councillor for the Fraser Valley Branch and Treasurer of BCIA. In 2013, Brian served as President-Elect, as the President in 2013 and as the Past President in 2014. Throughout his time on Council, Brian has taken an interest in governance. He served on the Governance Committee after leaving Council and served as Chair of that committee from 2016-2018. In 2018, Brian was elected to Council for a two-year term. Over the past 2 years, BCIA has been dealing with the Professional Reliance Review of resource professionals, resulting in the Professional Governance Act, which has become a primary focus of BCIA.
After working in BC’s agriculture industry for over 40 years, Brian retired in 2017. Brian’s employment history is extensive, ranging from a Greenhouse Specialist for the Province of BC, an extension/quality/pest management horticulturalist with BC HotHouse Foods Inc. and an Agricultural Scientist with Ocean Spray of Canada, Ltd. In addition, Brian did private consulting for the greenhouse industry and was also an instructor for 2 years at Kwantlen College (now KPU).
