Seminar: Mountain Water Resources and Climate Change: Impacts, Options & Constraints
Dr. Hans Schreier, Professor Emeritus, MLWS
Friday, October 23, 2020
2:00 – 3:00 PM
via Zoom
ABSTRACT:
Mountains, the water towers of humanity are warming up much faster than most lowland areas. What are the effects on the water cycle, what are the implications for all land use activities downstream and how do we adapt to these changes and mitigate impacts? The presentation will provide an update on recent climate events in mountains, show how this impacts land use activities and provide examples of effective adaptation initiatives. Examples of snow farming, water consumption constraints and community initiative will be provided for the B.C. mountains and hydropower issues will be featured from other parts of the world.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Hans Schreier is a Professor Emeritus at UBC and participates in the Land and Water Systems program. His research focuses on watershed management, water pollution, land use impacts on water and climate change. He conducted numerous water projects in the Himalayas, the Andes and the Canadian Rocky Mountains, as well as the Lower Fraser Valley. He has taught many international training courses in managing watersheds in mountains, with a specific focus on how climate change is impacting the water cycle and watershed management. Currently, his main focus is on how climate change is impacting the water cycle, how to adapt to these changes and how to mitigate such impacts.
