Job Title Agricultural Land Use Inventory (ALUI) Technician
Employer Partnership for Water Sustainability in BC
Degree Completed in 2022

What are your main job responsibilities or activities in your current position?

As an ALUI Technician, I primarily analyze aerial photographs to identify different land uses, classify land surface data using LiDAR and optical imaging technologies, and assist in field surveys during the summer. I utilize ArcPro/ArcMap for data analysis and use mobile technologies for on-site data collection. My work involves close collaboration with a team of Professional Agrologists, GIS specialists, and the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

What do you enjoy and also, what do you find challenging about your current position?

I enjoy the diversity of my work, from using technology like ESRI software to conducting outdoor field surveys, and the satisfaction of contributing to agricultural land use planning in British Columbia. A tough part of my job is spending a lot of time looking closely at images, maps, and aerial photos from different years, to see how the land cover has changed. It takes a lot of focus and can be hard to do for a long time. But even with these challenges, my job stays fulfilling because I love agriculture. Getting to solve important problems using both technology and fieldwork keeps me engaged and not too bored.

How has your education in the MLWS program served you in your career?

My education in the MLWS program has significantly shaped my career. It connected me with a valuable network of professionals, deepening my understanding of the field. Through the program, I learned about the water demand tool, which is closely related to my work and enhances my understanding of managing water resources. Additionally, the program also opened up various job opportunities and enabled me to meet the qualifications for registering as an AAg with BCIA, broadening my professional scope. This comprehensive education has expanded my professional horizons and allowed me to apply my education effectively in the fields of agriculture and environmental management.
