Why did you apply for the Master of Land and Water Systems?
Growing up in Jordan, a country facing a wide range of environmental challenges, I have had first-hand experience of many of the environmental pressures from a very young age. In Jordan, key challenges include severe water scarcity, climate change and drought. My awareness of these stresses fueled my commitment to addressing environmental issues, and this is the reason why I chose this field for my academic and professional career. I have completed my undergraduate degree in Water and Environmental Engineering and worked as a researcher at the West Asia – North Africa (WANA) Institute, a policy think tank based in Amman. I believe that the Master of Land and Water Systems would be a cornerstone in further advancing my career.
The reality in Jordan as well as many countries around the world is characterised by the combined stresses of food, water and energy shortages. An inextricable challenge that has been further exacerbated by the impacts of climate change, as well as a complex set of demographic, economic and political factors. What interested me the most is that the Master of Land and Water Systems offers a holistic package of environmental management, science based skills and professional communication, which are key elements in building environmental leaderships that are capable of addressing these challenges, and able to develop concrete solutions for an effective protection, management and conservation of natural resources.
What are you most excited about learning in the MLWS program?
In this one year professional degree, I aim to strengthen my knowledge and scientific understanding of land and water linkages for resource conservation, livelihoods and human security. These issues are the foundation of my career plans in environmental management and planning. I look forward to gaining invaluable knowledge from the distinguished, well knowledgeable and experienced faculty members. I am particularly excited about topics related to watershed management and the assessment and evaluation of land and water resources.
Additionally, the Master of Land and Water Systems attracts students from various countries around the world. This offers unique and exciting opportunities for discussion, debate and exchange of ideas between students with diverse experience and academic backgrounds.
What are some of your favourite hobbies?
In my free time, I enjoy being active and going outside. I enjoy running, hiking, cycling and practicing Argentinian Tango.
