Why did you apply for the Master of Land and Water Systems?
During my undergraduate studies in plant and soil sciences, I was captivated by the central role water plays in our landscapes and food systems. I followed this degree with several years working full-time at the UBC Farm where I was able to apply myself with hands-on irrigation management. Working at the farm solidified my interest in pursuing agriculture professionally and further stoked my curiosity about the complex water systems around us. I applied to the MLWS program to gain a deeper knowledge about the vital watersheds and hydrological systems that support life at every scale. My goal is to eventually become a consultant for sustainable farms to provide guidance on water management practices and optimized irrigation systems.
What are you most excited about learning in the MLWS program?
I’m very excited to learn more about soil processes and water infiltration in urban and agricultural settings. I hope to broaden my perspective beyond agricultural water use to better understand how to satisfy human needs without compromising native and wild ecosystems. Soil dynamics fascinated me during my undergrad and I’m eager to refresh this knowledge and dig deeper into the complexities of soil-water relationships.
What are some of your favourite hobbies?
I have an adorable and sometimes insufferable cat named Obi. When I’m not home with him, I enjoy hiking to new places in BC (especially lakes), and riding my motorcycle. I enjoy working with my hands and have dabbled with metal working and pottery but I haven’t pursued these crafts recently as much as I would like to.
