Why did you apply for the Master of Land and Water Systems?
My time studying ecology, conservation, and sociology at the University of Guelph really sparked my commitment to tackling complex environmental challenges. I’m drawn to the MLWS program because I’m eager to deepen my understanding of sustainable land and water management—an area that perfectly aligns with both my academic background and my passion for ecological conservation. I’m excited about the possibility of contributing to Canadian policy, where I can use my knowledge and hands-on skills to develop tangible solutions. The MLWS program, with its emphasis on practical learning and collaborative problem-solving, feels like the perfect next step for me.
What are you most excited about learning in the MLWS program?
I am most excited about the opportunity to engage in a major project under the guidance of UBC faculty and a professional co-supervisor. This aspect of the MLWS program will allow me to apply academic theories to real-world challenges, honing my skills in project management and stakeholder engagement. I am particularly eager to learn from and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, as this will enhance my ability to approach problems from multiple perspectives. I also look forward to building relationships with mentors and professionals in the field, which will be invaluable as I pursue a career in sustainable land and water management.
What are some of your favourite hobbies?
I grew up in the small town of Bracebridge, Ontario, where exploring nature was a massive part of my childhood. My connection to nature stuck with me into my adult life, and developed into a love for travel. I also enjoy swimming, camping, hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, skiing, yoga, and writing. I have also recently discovered a joy for scuba diving and underwater exploration as I received my PADI certification in Honduras in 2023.
