Why did you apply for the Master of Land and Water Systems?
I applied for the Master of Land and Water Systems (MLWS) program because of my passion for addressing environmental challenges, particularly those related to land degradation and water pollution. Growing up in a country that has been severely affected by illegal mining activities, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact these activities had on our land and water bodies. This experience fueled my interest in environmental science, especially in finding practical solutions to these pressing issues. Professionally, my goal is to specialize in the reclamation of polluted lands and the management of water resources, particularly in regions affected by illegal mining and other environmental challenges. The MLWS program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is uniquely suited to my academic and professional aspirations. It offers a multidisciplinary approach that integrates natural resources management, policy analysis, and ecological restoration. The program’s emphasis on practical, science-based skills, along with its strong connections to industry professionals, will equip me with the expertise needed to make a meaningful impact in my field. UBC’s reputation as one of the top universities globally, along with the program’s strong emphasis on practical experience, made it the ideal choice for furthering my education and professional development.
What are you most excited about learning in the MLWS program?
I am most excited about delving into the practical aspects of land and water resource management that the MLWS program at UBC offers. Specifically, I am eager to gain hands-on experience in ecological restoration, sustainable soil management, and water quality assessment. These areas are critical to addressing the environmental challenges I am passionate about, particularly the reclamation of polluted lands and the restoration of water bodies affected by illegal mining activities.
The MLWS’s structure of integrating scientific knowledge with real-world applications is appealing to me. I am looking forward to engaging with elective courses such as Advanced Sustainable Soil Management and Ecological Restoration, as these will allow me to develop specialized expertise in accordance with my career goals. Additionally, the opportunity to work on a major project alongside industry professionals excites me, as it will provide invaluable experience in applying what I learn to solve real environmental problems.
What are some of your favourite hobbies?
I can spend my whole weekend watching soccer games across the world. I do play soccer as well, and also love watching The Boston Celtics hoop basketball.
