Why did you apply for the Master of Land and Water Systems?

I completed my Agric. MSc. (Hons) in 1990. My first job was as Water Management Officer in a World Bank assisted Salinity Control and Reclamation Project. In 1992 I moved to Australia and started working as a research assistant in soil section at the University of Queensland, Brisbane. I lived there until 1998 as my wife was completing her PhD in Nutritional Sciences. In 2002, I immigrated to Canada and got involved in business through a friend, by complete accident. I still own a business but I’ve never enjoyed it.

A few months ago, my grade 12 student son, was obsessed to get an admission at UBC after his graduation. We were surfing the UBC web page where I came across the MLWS program. It was like an instant love. I read further and liked it more and more. It invoked that sleeping scientist inside me and I immediately applied (hit the iron when it’s hot). In a few weeks time I was offered a place. Now both my house and business are up for sale and I am looking forward to joining the program in September. Meanwhile, my son changed his mind and got an admission at the University of Alberta instead!

What are you most excited about learning in the MLWS program?

It will give me an opportunity to work again in a field I enjoy.

What are some of your favourite hobbies?

Spending time with my three lovely kids and beautiful wife. I also enjoy watching cricket, I'm always following the Pakistani and Australian teams.
